Trailhead Park is Houston's 18 acre trailhead to the Root River Bike Trail. Wetlands and prairie flowers inhabit it. Picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms and primitive camping are available.

The City of Houston owns and operates the Houston Nature Center. It is located at Trailhead Park and has a visitor information center and restrooms and showers. The Nature Center is home to Alice, the Great Horned Owl.

Horse back riding / Hiking |

The "Mountains of Minnesota" offer phenomenal horse back riding and hiking opportunities. Catch a hiking trail at South Park located right in Houston. The state Wet Bark Trail and private trails are available for horse back riding. |

Root River State Trail |
|
The Root River State Trail is 42 miles long going west from Houston to Rushford, Peterson, Whalan, Lanesboro, and Fountain. It borders the Root River and winds through the bluffs of southeastern Minnesota. The most challenging part of the trail is between Money Creek Woods and Houston.

From Rushford to Houston, the Root River straightens as the valley broadens. It is bordered by pastureland mixed with cottonwood and maple trees surrounded by the rolling hills.
Keep your eyes open for white-tailed deer, gray fox, red fox, coyote, raccoon, woodchucks, squirrels, weasels and badgers on the shore. In the water look for otter, beaver, lizards, and snakes and in the
air, over 40 species including blue herons, egrets, and wood ducks plus raptors soaring. |
